CHALLENGE: SHAG approached RocketDog at a pivotal moment: a respected nonprofit with over 35 senior-living communities across the Puget Sound region, they were looking to modernize their digital presence while honoring their decades-long mission. The previous website lacked clarity, accessibility, and emotional resonance—three essentials for engaging both seniors and their families. The project needed more than a design facelift; it required a complete rethink of brand messaging, user flow, and visual storytelling to reflect SHAG’s unique blend of affordability, community, and care.
SOLUTION: RocketDog led a full-scale website transformation—starting with a deep dive into SHAG’s audience, values, and service offerings. We restructured the site architecture to better support user needs, allowing seniors, caregivers, and property managers to quickly find relevant information. Our UX/UI team focused on clean navigation, legible typography, and a friendly visual tone tailored for older users.
To bring SHAG’s brand to life, we produced a custom photoshoot featuring real residents and staff across multiple properties. These authentic visuals became the heart of the site—building trust, conveying warmth, and capturing the spirit of each community. From there, we refreshed the overall brand messaging to better articulate SHAG’s mission: creating affordable senior housing that feels like home.
SHAG needed a website that could reflect the warmth of their communities while delivering the clarity and confidence families need when making major life decisions. Their audience—older adults, adult children, and caregivers—seek affordable housing that feels safe, welcoming, and connected. We responded with a refreshed brand voice, intuitive site architecture, and a clean, accessible design system. Authentic photography replaced impersonal stock imagery, while thoughtful UX made navigation feel effortless. From homepage to floor plans, every element was built to support trust, reduce friction, and position SHAG as a compassionate leader in senior living.
In many cases, the first impression of SHAG happens on a mobile device—often during a stressful or time-sensitive search. We made mobile optimization a priority from day one, ensuring fast load times, tap-friendly navigation, and seamless content flow across all screen sizes. Community filters, contact forms, and resource pages were all designed with mobile-first thinking, making it easier for adult children and caregivers to access critical information on the go. The mobile experience is now just as thoughtful and frictionless as the desktop version—if not more so.
Before moving into visual design, we created a robust set of wireframes to map out the full site experience. This step allowed SHAG’s internal team to visualize content hierarchy, user flows, and navigation structures without the distraction of color or imagery. Each key page—homepage, community listings, lifestyle pages, and contact forms—was wireframed with purpose, ensuring clarity and usability from the start. The wireframes also served as a collaborative tool, inviting client feedback early and helping everyone align on priorities before design and development began. This process laid the groundwork for a site that’s not only beautiful, but strategically sound and built with user needs in mind.
Our first move was to simplify and restructure the entire site experience from the ground up. We conducted stakeholder interviews, mapped out the needs of multiple user groups—from adult children researching housing options for loved ones to seniors browsing events in their communities—and then redesigned the navigation to support intuitive, low-friction journeys. Key information like locations, availability, and lifestyle amenities is now accessible within just a few clicks. The final architecture not only made the site easier to use, but also created a solid, scalable foundation to support SHAG’s growing network of communities and future content expansions.
We designed every element of the interface through the lens of empathy and inclusion. For many users, this may be their first time exploring senior living options online, so the experience had to feel safe, intuitive, and human. We applied thoughtful visual hierarchy, high-contrast colors, large tap targets, and simplified layouts to ensure accessibility across age groups and abilities. We also built in design patterns that help guide users gently—from initial discovery to deeper engagement—making the process feel less intimidating and more empowering every step of the way.
Stock photography simply couldn’t capture the warmth and connection SHAG fosters in its communities. So we planned and produced a custom multi-location photo shoot, capturing real residents, staff, and moments that reflect the spirit of each community. These images did more than make the site feel beautiful—they built trust. By showing real people enjoying real lives in SHAG properties, we gave prospective residents and their families a glimpse into what life there actually looks like. The visuals now play a starring role in both the website and SHAG’s ongoing marketing efforts.
